About the Tutor

The English Tutor is a highly accomplished, Cambridge-trained
English teacher with almost forty years of experience
teaching students worldwide.

Background

After completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of Cambridge in the 1990s, The English Tutor taught in a diverse range of UK comprehensive schools and prestigious international schools overseas. Almost four decades of teaching have provided a deep understanding of how students learn, where they commonly lose confidence, and what it takes to help them succeed.

Today, The English Tutor specialises in delivering high-quality, personalised tuition via Zoom, working with individual students, carefully structured small groups and home-schooling families. Her teaching combines decades of classroom experience with an in-depth understanding of the skills students need to become confident, perceptive and accomplished readers and writers.

How The English Tutor teaches

Students learn through model answers, sophisticated vocabulary banks, essay plans, analytical frameworks, rigorous intellectual debate, targeted examination practice and detailed individual feedback. They are taught to evaluate and edit their own work and to become confident, independent and self-sufficient learners.

All students benefit from:

  • A diagnostic first session, including a short piece of written work, so that teaching begins from evidence rather than assumption.
  • Work is evaluated, marked, and returned with constructive written and verbal feedback.
  • Regular progress notes for parents, and an open line for questions between lessons.
