Years 7–9
KS3 English
The years before GCSE are the ones in which habits are formed. KS3 tuition builds reading stamina, precise written expression and the confidence to hold an opinion about, and actively engage with, a text.
What we cover
- Reading widely and closely: novels, poetry, drama and non-fiction, chosen with the student's interests in mind.
- Paragraph and essay architecture — the point, the evidence, the explanation, and how to make them cohere.
- Grammar, punctuation and sentence variety taught within writing rather than as isolated drills.
- Vocabulary built through reading, with a working glossary the student maintains.
- Creative and descriptive writing, including narrative shape and voice.
- Speaking and listening: articulating an argument aloud before committing it to paper.
Why it matters
GCSE English rewards students who read fluently and write with control. Those capacities are far easier to build in Year 8 than in Year 11. KS3 tuition is therefore quietly ambitious: it is not remedial work, but preparation for the demands to come.
