Years 10–11

GCSE English Language & Literature

Two demanding qualifications and a great deal of material to hold in mind. Tuition brings order to it — text by text, skill by skill, with the mark scheme always in view.

Literature

  • Shakespeare: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and other set plays — character, structure and context handled as one argument.
  • The nineteenth-century novel: A Christmas Carol and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
  • Modern texts and drama: An Inspector Calls, Blood Brothers, Animal Farm, Lord of the Flies.
  • The poetry anthology, plus systematic training in unseen poetry comparison.

Language

  • Reading Papers 1 and 2: inference, language analysis, structural comment and evaluation.
  • Descriptive and narrative writing with a genuine sense of craft, not memorised phrases.
  • Transactional writing: letters, articles and speeches with audience and register controlled.
  • Accuracy under pressure — the marks most often lost in the final ten minutes of a paper.

Examination craft

Drawing on decades of classroom experience, The English Tutor teaches students how examiners read: what counts as a developed point, why a thesis in the opening lines changes the grade, and how to budget time so that the final question is never rushed. Timed practice is marked to the official criteria and returned with a grade indication.
